Empire Pass is one of those places that looks beautiful in every season – no, that’s a lie because in the late fall the road is closed and usually doesn’t open again until June – but there’s something extra magical about it in the fall. As September arrives, the nearby aspens start to shift from summer green into golden hues, the air feels crisp, and the mountains light up in warm tones that are perfect for engagement photos. If you’re looking for a Park City engagement location that truly shines in autumn, this is it.

For Gabi + Kyle, Empire Pass was the perfect choice. Their wedding was planned for February in a nearby mountain valley, surrounded with banks of snow, so a fall engagement session gave them the best of both worlds: cozy, golden portraits before celebrating their vows in a winter wonderland. The September timing couldn’t have been better—the light was soft and romantic, with just enough color in the trees to hint at the season ahead.

We wandered the trail and found overlooks that showcased the valley below, the changing aspens dotting the hillsides with pockets of gold. The way Kyle looked at Gabi against the backdrop of those sweeping peaks and golden grasses—it was impossible not to feel the romance of the season.

But I’m a sucker for anything “cozy season” or as it affectionately known in my house now with a full blown teenage daughter “hoa, hoa, hoa, hoa, hoa” season. (IYKYK) And I really just love “sweater weather”.

Why Empire Pass Works So Well in Fall
What I love about Empire Pass in September is how versatile it is. The terrain is the same mix of grass meadows, evergreens, and wide-open mountain views, but fall adds an extra layer of richness and depth. You get that windswept, adventurous feeling without having to hike for miles—and because sunset comes earlier in the fall, sessions feel more relaxed and cozy. The neutralness of landscape also make it so YOU are the focus of the images.

Another bonus? Fall tends to be slightly less busy with mountain bikers than peak summer, which means there’s a better chance of snagging one of those limited parking spots at the overlook. We still planned ahead to arrive early, but once we were there, it felt quiet and peaceful—the perfect atmosphere for celebrating a love story.

Tips for Engagement Sessions at Empire Pass in the Fall
- Arrive Early for Parking
With only about 8 parking spots, carpooling or arriving ahead of time is always a good idea. Even in September, this spot is popular among hikers and mountain bikers in the daylight hours. And among photographers and their clients. - Layer Up
The evenings cool off quickly in the fall, especially once the sun dips behind the peaks. Bring a jacket, wrap, or cozy sweater that can also double as a prop for snuggly photos. Layers photograph so well. - Plan Around the Light
The sun sets earlier than in summer, and the mountains block the light even faster. I always time fall sessions to try to catch that dreamy golden glow before it fades into twilight (which means blue light which isn’t as nice for skin tones). - Think About Outfits
Earth tones, rich neutrals and jewel tones, and textured layers look incredible against the autumn scenery. But heck, you could go full Candian-tuxedo or even a real tuxedo. I’ve had brides choose this location for their “First Look” and it does NOT disappoint with a bride in view.

If you’re looking for the best Park City engagement location for cozy, romantic photos with breathtaking mountain views, Empire Pass is hard to beat—especially in the fall. Whether you’re planning a winter wedding (like Gabi + Kyle) or just want portraits that showcase Park City’s natural beauty, this spot delivers every time.
